Electric Smart Glass

Large-area glazing is the trend of our time – whether on building facades, the flat roof, conservatory or as glass tiles on the ground:

But the sun bounces in the summer months on ordinary window glass, it is quickly too hot and bright. A modern alternative to roller shutters and blinds offers electrochromic glass, also known as smart or  electric smart glass. The switchable solar control glass can be darkened at the touch of a button, which allows the heat and light transmission of the glazing to be individually regulated – depending on the weather and personal preference.

This intelligent glass does not block the sun, like common sun protection systems, but optimizes them. In winter, for example, solar radiation is used as heating and, in the summer, EC glass uses the properties of a sunshade glass with the help of dimming. Furthermore, you can dimming EC-glass as you wish, to protect yourself from prying eyes without reducing the incidence of light.

EC glass is not only cost-reducing but also environmentally friendly, as less CO² is emitted by reduced heating and air conditioning use and, of course, less energy is consumed.
The intelligent EC glass is slowly establishing itself in the German market, which is why there has been a fall in prices and an expansion of the product range.

How does dimmable glass work?
Now the question arises as to how dimmable glass works at all and whether it is really energy efficient or just pure profiteering.

The Intelligent Window consists of three float glass panes.
The float glass pane facing the interior is equipped with a thermal barrier coating. On the outside there is an electrochromic composite structure of the other two discs, the inside of each of which is equipped with wafer-thin oxide coatings (mostly tungsten oxide), which can absorb and release ions. Between the panes a lithium ion conductive polymer film is placed. At the push of a button, an electrical voltage (<5 volts) is created which activates ion exchange. As a result, the glass unit turns blue and reduces the light and total energy transmission of the glazing.

It is possible to choose different gradations and to tune the intelligent window optimally to the incidence of light. The coloring process takes place silently and lasts from the first to the darkest stage at a 100 * 100 cm large window about 12 minutes.

Further advantages are that the electrochromic laminated glass pane can be combined with numerous additional functions, such as sound or burglary protection.

Intelligent glass – what other variants are there?
Intelligent glass is diverse. Other variants include LC glass or glazings with a resin layer between the panes which react to temperatures. LC (liquid crystal) glass is similar in construction to EC glass. A liquid crystal layer is embedded in conductive films between the laminated glass. By permanent power supply, the crystals are ordered and the discs are transparent. If the circuit is interrupted, the order of the crystals dissolves and the disc is dimmed. A disadvantage to EC glass is that LC glass requires almost all power.

Thermal-responsive glazings have a layer of resin embedded with polymeric micro-chips between the laminated glass. If the resin warms up strongly (eg <40 � C), the layer changes state and scatters incident light. The glass is dimmed. Here is a disadvantage that the glass is not suitable as EC-glass as a screen and no manual control is possible.

Another option for Intelligent Glass is turning windows, which are fixed in a special turning frame and have corresponding energy transmittances for summer and winter, which stop the heat or use it as an energy source. The summer side has an energy transmittance of 0.39, leaving only 40% of the heat inward; The winter side has an energy transmittance of 0.65 and thus uses 65% of solar energy as a heat supplier.

The enumerated intelligent glasses are expensive to buy, but they save heating costs in winter and air conditioning costs in summer in the long term. The advantage of intelligent glass is also in listed buildings, if external sun protection devices are prohibited, for example.
